Lyle D. Peters has been serving as a church musician since his youth. Raised in the Church of the Brethren, he played piano, organ, and sang in the choir at his home church. He ministered as Director of Music at a non-denominational charismatic church in Des Moines, IA, for eleven years. While in his undergraduate studies he served as pianist a Harvard University Baptist Church, Tulsa, OK, and then as tenor vocalist and organist at St. Anne Catholic Church, Broken Arrow, OK. During his graduate studies he played piano, organ, cantored and did tenor solo work at Church of the Holy Spirit, Schaumburg, IL, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Waukegan, IL. More recently, he served as Director of Music Ministries at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Merced, CA, for eleven years and taught music in the parish grade school for 3 years. He now serves and ministers (since August, 2015) as Pastoral Associate for Liturgy and Music at St. Joseph Catholic Community, Eldersburg, MD.
Educationally he has earned the following degrees: a Master of Arts in Music Performance (Composition) from CSU Fresno, CA; a Master of Divinity and Baccalaureate of Sacred Theology both from the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL; and a Bachelor of Music (Composition), from Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK (all with distinction and honors). While in CA he studied voice in the private studio of world-renowned mezzo-soprano Sharon Graham for ten years.
During his ministry he has been a member of numerous musical and ministerial organizations and has served in local and regional leadership position. He looks forward to working with the wonderful and gracious musicians he has met in the Baltimore area and hopes to follow in the pattern of fine leadership which preceded him.
As a young teen, I enjoyed singing and playing the flute with the "folk choir" in the late 70's/early 80's. After some time focused on other priorities, I came back to music ministry in 1995 with the contemporary choir at Holy Family, Davidsonville, eventually moving into role of cantor. I spent 15 years co-directing the choristers with my dear friend and musical partner Jane, with an emphasis on training young cantors. That endeavor lead to my role spearheading a teen ensemble (who dubbed themselves FYI: For Your Inspiration) from 2002-2013. I'm still friends with many of those young adults today. I currently cantor at St Bernadette, Severn.
I've been an NPM Baltimore member for more than a decade, and helped to create our Facebook page. Most recently, I headed the Facilities, Equipment and Musical Instruments subcommittee for the NPM Convention held here in Baltimore this July. It was exhausting and exhilarating! Our first convention in Baltimore was a success that I was proud to be a part of and I can't wait until we do it again.
